For many years in the first half of the 20th century, short poems served as a common filler in magazines and newspapers. This provided a platform for emerging poets to showcase their work on a broad scale while elevating the literary quality of the publications they appeared in. My Grandmother had a deep love for poetry. After her passing, the family discovered a collection of clippings in a back closet. This cache included poetry, articles, and even a few cartoons that caught her interest and featured the works of writers now lost to history. As I explored her files, I found these pieces charming and nostalgic. I share the following short poems today, hoping others may appreciate them as much as my grandmother and I did.

A star was shining in the sky
It seemed to me he winked his eye.
And so I winked right back and him.
Just at that moment you walked in,
And now the star seems dull & dim.
I wonder why-?

By Low Road

You took the short road
And I took the long
And got hereafore you
On wings of song.

You took the highway
And let me go
Down by the path
Where the brambles blow;

Down by the little lane
Where love lay in wait,
You go here brother,
A little late.

A Woman Speaks Across the Years

Wherever you may be in all the world
This winter night of softly falling snow,
So like the night we went divided ways,
I send this word to you and think you know.

Whatever life and years have done to you,
Whatever life and years have done to me,
Though other greater loves have come to us,
We can never be sundered utterly.

There was too much of beauty that we knew
Together and there was enough of pain;
Two lives that have been bound by these, my dear,
Are never wholly separate lives again.

There was too much we gave each other once,
Beyond our love itself, that stayed to bless
The years that were to be.
Some bond endures
When two have shared so much of loveliness.

If this is the end, then this is the end,
I never was one to complain,
The sun has shone for a long, long time
If it wants to rain, let it rain.

If you want to go your way, then go,
I know a new path, too.
Roads always cross somewhere sometime,
Well, I’ll be seeing you.

All Of A Sudden

I gathered daffodils in bloom today,
All I could find to pick,
I bought a pink frosted cake for tea
And a tall green candlestick.

I hummed a song as a storm came up
And spattered the window pane;
I lighted the apple wood fire you laid
After the last spring rain.

I polished the amber cups you like
And halfway opened the door
Then all of a sudden it came to me
That you wont be back anymore!
